Installation Legal Office

The Staff Judge Advocate's area offices serve all Army personnel and their families assigned to units and organizations in Hawaii and certain other locations in USARPAC. All Army active duty and retired personnel and their families are entitled to legal assistance. The Claims Office handles claims for personal property that is lost or damaged incident to military service, such as household goods shipment claims.

Schofield Barracks: The Schofield Barracks Claims and Legal Assistance offices are located in Building 2037 on Humphreys Road. Call Claims at 808-655-9279; call Legal Assistance at 808-655-8607. View hours of operation or phone numbers.

**The Legal Assistance Office will be closed April 18, 22 and 24. Divorce and Seperation Briefings are rescheduled for 1:30 p.m., April 23 and 25.

Tripler Army Medical Center: The Tripler branch office, 808-433-5311, is located in Room 222 in Wing 2D.

All offices are closed weekends and federal holidays. Hours of operation may be modified on training holidays and pay day activities. Last sign in will be accepted 30 minutes prior to closing for the day.

The U.S. Army Hawaii Tax Assistance Center is open through April 15 and located in Trailer #1, Grimes Street. Open weekdays, 9:30 a.m.-4 p.m. Call 808-655-1040.

The Tax Assistance Center is open for appointments from service members, military family members and retirees. Walk-in appointments available on a limited basis.

What To Bring To Your Appointment

  • Proof of identification:
    Social security cards for you, your spouse and your dependents, or a number verification letter issued by the Social Security Administration. Military or dependent ID cards are acceptable as legitimate copies of social security cards.
  • Birth dates for you, your spouse and your dependents.
  • A copy of last year’s Federal and State returns.
  • Current year’s tax package, if received.
  • Form W-2, W-2G, 1099-R:
    Wage and earning statement(s) from all employers, gambling winnings, etc.:
  • Form 1098 or Form 1098-T:
    For mortgage statement or similar document(s) for any houses, condos or land you owned; or a tuition statement.
  • Information regarding any rental properties you owned:
    If you owned more than one propery, they cannot be owned purely as investment properties for us to prepare and file your return. See below for "Tax Assistance Services Not Provided."
  • Form 1099:
    Interest and dividend statements from banks, unemployment compensation, Social Security, pensions, annuities and cancelled debts.
  • Receipts for all tax-deductable donations.
  • Copy of a cancelled check that includes bank routing and account numbers for direct deposit/withdrawl.
  • Total amount paid for child care and the child care provider's tax identifying number:
    The provider's social security number or the business Employer Identification Number.
  • Both spouses:
    To file a married filing joint tax return electronically, both spouses must be present to sign the required forms. One spouse cannot prepare the return and bring it home for the other spouse to review and sign. Spouses may come in separately to review the return, but the return cannot be filed until both spouses review and approve the return in person.

Tax Assistance Services Not Provided

The following tax issues are beyond the scope of our tax assistance program:

  • More than one rental property;
  • Filing a Schedule C for a business that is not in-home child care through the Family Child Care program;
  • Clergy/ministry expense deductions;
  • Schedule K-1 income from partnerships;
  • More than 10 investment transactions - no day traders;
  • Appeals of IRS decisions to Tax Courts;
  • Cancellation of debt; and
  • Preparation of prior year returns.

We cannot waive any of these exceptions. Individuals whose taxes fall outside our scope of services should contact a CPA or other tax-preparation service.
